Profile

Greetings! Let me introduce myself. My name is Dr. Frederick Bacala, and I am one of the professors at the Practical English Program at YCU. I was born and raised in California, went to the University of Hawaii, worked in Yokohama Japan, and lived in Las Vegas before coming back to Japan! At one point in time, I was studying to be a naval officer, was an Emergency Medical Technician, radio DJ, and even coached a kids basketball team several decades ago! I have been teaching English for more than 19 years, and have taught at several colleges and universities in Japan and the United States. Throughout this time, I have studied as much as possible regarding language teaching, and also teaching culture, which is an integral part of language. I completed my doctorate degree in Education by the end of 2019 and my research interests are educational curriculum, cultural linguistics issues, and World Englishes. I currently live in Yokohama, and I love this city (and Hamamatsu!!!)! I also love teaching, so I look forward to teaching all of you!

English is a language that is used throughout the world in communicating with people from all walks of life. In order to succeed in the global environment, one must be able to communicate. English is that tool to help you succeed. Please come to my class with an open mind, and while you are learning English, also learn about culture. This is important because language and culture are very much related. When I teach language, I also teach culture.  An open mind and strong study habits are the way to succeed. I look forward to seeing you and also look forward to your success!
