学生スタッフVolunch夏休みボランティアレポート２

私は、この夏休み中に６週間（８月７日～９月１６日）アメリカのカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校（UCLA）に留学した。実際に現地の学生との交流や授業を通して、日本の大学とアメリカの大学にはさまざま違いがあることを発見した。
UCLAには横浜市立大学ボランティア支援室のようなボランティア団体“UCLA Volunteer Center”が存在している。ここでは、学生に対するボランティア活動の紹介や、ロサンゼルスのまちと密着した活動などを行っている。また、他にも多くの学生主宰のボランティア団体があり、それらとの連携役も務めている。例えば、イベントの企画、運営を協力して行ったり、学生に対して奨学金やリーダーシップ育成のイベント紹介などを行ったりしている。学生主宰のボランティア団体との違いは、ボランティアや社会貢献活動を広めていくことを目標としているところにある。
UCLA Volunteer Centerに所属するにあたって、13ヶ月以上仕事（１年間のイベントの企画）を遂行すること、定期的にミーティングに参加することが求められる。そして、＄1000（約11万円）の奨学金が支払われる。仕事内容としては、他に学生に対するボランティア活動の紹介、ホームパージの更新などがある。
また、センターが中心となって行っているプロジェクトとしては、「UCLA Food Drive (十分な食事を得ることが難しい人のための食べ物の募金活動)」、「Nonprofit Networking Night（UCLA生とインターンシップ生や働いてくれる人を探している企業をつなげる活動）」などがある。

そこで、UCLAではどのようなボランティア活動が行われているのかに興味を持ち、実際にボランティア活動をしている学生にインタビューを行った。

ボランティアに参加することで学んだこと
－For student, why did you decided to be a member of UCLA volunteer center?
（なぜ、UCLA Volunteer Centerに所属しようと思ったのですか。）
As a student, I was involved in other community service student groups and volunteering clubs so I already had a passion for civic engagement and service. I decided to apply as staff at the UCLA Volunteer Center since I wanted to spread that passion and drive for volunteering and service to all of the UCLA community and the Los Angeles area. The center does so many great things and shapes so many different lives, so I knew I had to get more involved.

－Did your ideas changed after participating in some activities?
（ボランティア活動に参加することによって気持ちに変化はありましたか。）
Throughout my entire experience in volunteering and service, my perspectives have definitely changes for the better. I’m much more humble, open-minded, driven, and willing to speak up when I notice injustices. When I see a problem, I am more inclined to figure out what I personally can do to help. In addition, I have also become more educated and aware of the things happening in my community and have learned about so many different people’s lives and stories after working with them.

－How is student organizations and volunteer center connected?

Student organizations are initiated and run by the UCLA student body and often focus on specific missions and goals. The UCLA Volunteer Center, on the other hand, puts on volunteer projects and programs open to the UCLA community as a whole and focuses less on a specific mission but rather a broad mission to promote volunteerism and social good in our community. We collaborate with student organizations in a number of ways, both in collaborative event planning and in providing resources to student groups like scholarships and leadership opportunities. We host a ServeFest every year, which is an event where different community service organizations can table and recruit volunteers, and give out a Mongeli Award Scholarship to exceptional student volunteer organizations.

－What is the main job for student in volunteer center?
（学生として、Volunteer Centerでの仕事は何ですか。）
Students have the opportunity to join the Volunteer Center as part of staff (like me) or as a Volunteer Center Fellow. Student fellows are chosen to serve for thirteen months to work with the Center to plan the year’s agenda and attend regular meetings with staff and advisors. Fellows come from a variety of community and leadership perspectives at UCLA and in the Los Angeles community. Participating students receive a scholarship of $1,000 during the academic year for their service. The Fellows serve as an advisory board that works with the Center to increase the accessibility of community service and civic engagement opportunities by creating and promoting resources, support systems, and projects for both campus service organizations and students. As for staff, students are hired and paid to help run signature Volunteer Center projects, create and run our website, and other administrative work.（学生として、Volunteer Centerでの仕事は何ですか。）

インタビューを通して、横浜市立大学ボランティア支援室とUCLA Volunteer Centerには、様々な違いがあることを発見した。他の学生主宰のボランティア団体と連携を取っていたり、学校全体で定期的に活動を行っていたりと学ぶことが多くあった。しかし、同時に類似点もたくさんあることに気が付いた。地域との交流を大切にしていたり、ボランティア活動を広めることを目的としていたり、活動内容は異なっていても目標は同じではないかと思った。
この経験を横浜市立大学ボランティア支援室の活動に活かし、広報活動や地域とのつながりを大事にしていきたいと考える。
