STRUCTURE
Course Structure
Based on a study of relevant topics in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, including machine learning, data mining, data visualization and data management, we provide a fundamental understanding of the methods of data science. The curriculum also provides actual experience in front-line problems in a variety of application fields depending on each student’s interest such as business sciences, medicinal sciences and so on.
Merging arts and sciences
In addition to data science specific subjects such as statistics and computer science, our curriculum offers a wide variety of subjects in applied fields such as politics, economics, finance, public affairs, life science and others offered as subjects by the university. Our students have the freedom to choose subjects that appeal to them academically, and can help build their future careers.
Emphasis on real-life situations
We conduct PBL (Project Based Learning) in classrooms and also in companies, as well as some other institutions, which can provide good opportunities to have a wealth of exercises to cultivate communication skills and problem discovery/solving abilities.
Message from the Dean
Data Science in Continual Evolution
In the era of digital transformation, where vast amounts of data are generated daily, the importance of leveraging data has never been greater. Established in 2018 in response to this societal need, the School of Data Science has continued to earn strong expectations from local communities and beyond. To meet those expectations further, a renewed School of Data Science will launch in 2027 — with enrollment capacity doubled to 120 students, an expanded faculty and staff, and a redesigned curriculum. This year, entrance examinations for the first cohort of the new School of Data Science will be held from autumn through winter — change has already begun. The data science landscape has also changed dramatically since the current School of Data Science was established eight years ago. Large language models — commonly known as generative AI — emerged four years ago and have continued to evolve at an accelerating pace, affecting many areas of human activity, from business to daily life. Data scientists, once famously called "the sexiest job of the 21st century," are no exception: their role is shifting from "data analysis" to "value creation."
Data science, by its nature, is destined to evolve continuously — making it an exceptionally exciting field. From statistics and computer science to applications in healthcare, urban planning, and economics, we aim to convey the breadth and excitement of data science to our students. Through closer collaboration with businesses and government, we will contribute to society and, as a university rooted in Yokohama, contribute to our local community. We hope you will keep a close eye on the evolving School of Data Science.
