The fifth Yokohama City University (YCU) Science Summer Program (SSP) was held over August 19 – 23, 2013 at the YCU Hakkei Campus, the YCU Medical Center, the YCU Tsurumi Campus, the YCU Fukuura Campus’s Advanced Medical Research Center, and the Institute of Environmental Microbiology at Kyowa Kako Co., Ltd.

YCU, positioned along the seaside district between Yokohama and Tokyo, promotes and encourages international life innovation. In line with this, the aim of holding this program — which targets YCU students and undergraduate and graduate students at our international partner universities in Asia studying life sciences and medicine — is to nurture leaders who view the union of various scientific disciplines from a global perspective and can forge the future of humanity from a scientific standpoint. The program has been able to instill students with the ability to communicate the fun and importance of science to the world and to expand the international network between researchers and students.

Twelve graduate and undergraduate students from six partner universities — National Taiwan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National University of Singapore, University of the Philippines Manila, Vietnam National University, and Universiti Sains Malaysia — and 14 YCU students studying at the School of Medicine and the International College of Arts and Sciences participated in the SSP. The students spent an event-filled week learning a diverse range of sciences through lectures and practical classes given by professors engaged in cutting-edge research.
