Integrating knowledge from different disciplines of life, environment and medical sciences for the new era: "The reconstruction toward a brighter future for the world"

The fourth Yokohama City University (YCU) Science Summer Program (SSP) was held from August 13 through 17, 2012 at YCU Hakkei Campus, the YCU Medical Center, YCU Fukuura Campus, YCU Hospital, the Advanced Medical Research Center, the YCU Tsurumi Campus, Riken Yokohama Institute, and the Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo.

There were many fascinating themes this year, including serious global issues such as natural disasters and infectious disease, and future scientific achievements found in advanced medical science where discussions that focused on pluripotent stem cells, simulations, and exhaustive -omics analysis were conducted. Fifteen graduate and undergraduate students from six cooperating universities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Italy and Taiwan joined students from the School of Medicine and the International College of Arts and Sciences of YCU to participate in SSP with distinguished professors engaged in advanced research. Following lively discussion and academic exchange, the students were awarded academic credits and certificates.

In collaboration with the Project for Developing Innovation Systems of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT)—for which YCU serves as a base—the students had the opportunity to witness the advanced medical research taking place under the project.
