Usage Guide for Yokohama Residents and External Users

Library and Information Center Main Building

Yokohama City University Library and Information Center (Library) offers access to our academic materials that are not available at public libraries in Kanagawa Prefecture for those who are engaged in research and academic activities in the community. The Library Access for Residents service allows you to borrow library materials and browse materials in the library. If you do not to wish to register for this service or do not meet the criteria, please use the Browsing Service which is limited to browsing and copying of library materials.

Applying for Library Access for Residents

Qualifications

You can register for this service if you need access to academic materials that belong to YCU Library and Information Center. This service is available at the Main Library and the Medical LIbrary of the YCU Library and Information Center. Also, you must be aged 20 or over and currently reside or work within Kanagawa Prefecture.
(If you are affiliated with other universities or research institutes, please consult your university library or research institutes library.)

Application Process and Registration

Applications for Library Access for Residents are accepted at the YCU Main Library and Information Center, and the Medical Library.
After registering, we will issue you with a Library Card for Residents which gives you access to each of YCU's libraries. Please note that the conditions and regulations of each library apply.

* Please check the library service hours in advance.
* You will need to pay 500 yen as the fee for issuing a library card when registering.
* The library card for residents is valid for one year from the date of issuance.
* You can download an application form and see a description of the services available from the YCU Library and Information Center website.

Medical Library

Library and Information Center, Main Library:
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during periods when the library is open (closed from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays)
Medical Library:
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during periods when the library is open (closed on Sundays)
* Please check the opening hours on the Library and Information Center website in advance.

2. Application Process

Applying in Person

(1) Apply at the Main Desk.
The entrance is controlled by a user authentication system. When you visit the library for the first time, please use the interphone at the gate.
To apply, you will need to bring an official identification document (driver's license or health insurance card) that proves your name, address, and place of employment.

(2) Complete the "Library Access for Residents Application Form."
You can download the Library Access for Residents Application Form from here(Japanese).
(The application form is available in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.)

(3) You will need to use a prepaid card and pay 500 yen to cover the cost of issuing a library card.
You can purchase a prepaid card from the vending machine in the library. (The machine accepts 100-yen and 500-yen coins and 1,000-yen bills only.)
* If you wish to register at the Medical Library, please contact us for details.

(4) Submit the completed "Library Access for Residents Application Form" and a prepaid card along with your official identification document.

(5) After confirming your application, we will issue you with a Library Card for Residents.
* You will need to sign the Library Card for Residents.
* You can enter the library with your card next time you come to the library.
* The card is valid for one year from the date of issuarance.

Applying by Postal Mail (Medical Library)

You can apply by postal mail to register for the Medical Library only.
For details, please directly contact the library you will be using for the first time.

Applying for the Browsing Service

This service is designed for those who wish to browse materials that are available only at the Main Library of the YCU Library and Information Center.
* This service is available for non-residents of Kanagawa Prefecture. If you do not meet the criteria of "Library Access for Residents", please use this service.
* If you are affiliated with other universities or research institutes, you will need a Letter of Introduction.
* You need to apply every time you wish to visit the library.
* You can apply to use the browsing service for the Medical Library at the counter of the Medical Library.

Application Process

(1) Fill out the browsing service application form and submit it.

(2) If you are affiliated with other universities or research institutes, you will need to submit a Letter of Introduction issued by the library of your university or research institute.
(3) After verifying your application, we will issue you with a Browsing Card and Visitor's Badge.
* The service is available only on the day you have applied for.
* You can browse and copy library materials with this service. (But checkout privileges are limited to those with Library Access for Residents.)

Library and Information Center (Main Library) Usage Guide

1. Library Hours

Regular hours .................. 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. (Monday to Friday)
Saturday, Sunday ............. 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Abbreviated hours ............ 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (weekdays when classes are not in session)
Afternoon hours ..............12 p.m. - 10 p.m. (the 4th Thursday)
Abbreviated afternoon hours ..12 p.m. - 5 p.m. (the 4th Thursday when classes are not in session)
Closed ................ (national holidays, Saturdays and Sundays when classes are not in session)
* Libraries may not be available during examination periods.
(Please check the schedule posted on the library calendar or information bulletin board on the website of the Library and Information Center.)
* Try to finish using the library's services, other than checkout and return, 15 minutes before the closing time.

2. Materials, and Facilities Available

Available Materials

You are welcome to browse open-access materials located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the Library and Information Center (Main Library).
* Some materials including audiovisual materials and valuable materials are not available for browsing.
* Magazines, dictionaries, statistics, and collection materials are available for browsing inside the library only.
* You will not be able to use electronic journals or the contract database.
* To use closed-access materials, you will need to fill out a "Closed Access Materials Request Slip" and submit it at the Main Desk.

Checking the Librar's Collection on the Internet in Advance

You can search the library's collection using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) of the Library and Information Center available on the Internet.
Of the search results, those indicated as "Main Library" as the location refers to a collection stored at the Main Library of the YCU Library and Information Center.
(Collections stored at the Medical Library show "Medical Library.")
We recommend that you use this feature to check the availability before visiting the library.

Copying Materials

University Library allows you to make copies of library materials only in accordance with the provisions of the Copyright Law.
* Under the provisions of Article 31 of the Copyright Law, one copy per person for use in a limited range can be made if it is necessary for your research or studies.
Make sure you comply with the provisions of the Copyright Law.
* To use a photocopying machine in the library, you will need to purchase a copy card from the vending machine in the library.
(The machine accepts 100-yen and 500-yen coins and 1,000-yen bills only.)
* You can use the copy card both at the Main Library and the Medical Library.

Consultation Service

You can consult us regarding academic documentation at the Reference Desk.

Service hours: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Monday to Friday)
You can also apply for users' guidance sessions at the Reference Desk.
Services for issuing a Letter of Introduction to other libraries or ordering materials are not provided.

Checking-Out and Returning...Applicable for Resident Users only

If you have a library card for residents, you can checkout books from the Library.
Circulation: Up to four issues...Each Library(the Main Library and the Medical Liberary)
Loan Period: Two weeks
Bring your library card for residents and any books you wish to borrow to the Main Desk.
Be sure to return the books you have borrowed to the return table before the due date.
If the library is closed, place the books in the book drop located at the entrance of the library.

Notice

 Magazines, reference books (i.e. dictionaries and statistics), and collection materials are available for browsing inside the library only.
 Please note that you cannot extend borrowing periods.
 No further materials can be checked out until overdue materials are returned.
 Your checkout privileges may be suspended if your overdue violations exceed a proscribed limit.

Materials for In-Library Use Only

Reference books (i.e. dictionaries and statistics) and materials designated for in-library use only ("for reference only" materials) such as valuable books.
The following materials are available for in-library use only under the resident user privilege. (The catalog search will show "available for checkout", but it does not apply for resident users.)
 Newspapers, magazines, and serial publications
 Audiovisual materials (videos, DVDs, CDs, etc.), and machine-readable resources (i.e. CD-ROMs)
 Books at the new arrival section and university course-related section

Reservations

You cannot reserve library materials.

Facilities Available

To browse materials, please use the open-access room and reading room located on the 1st and 2nd floors.
 Put materials back after you have finished browsing them.
 You are welcome to use the search terminal designated for the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). To search other information, please consult the staff at the Reference Desk.
 Terminals for Internet connection are not available.
 Audio-visual rooms, seminar rooms, and common machine rooms are not available.

Notice on Using the Library

 Avoid using a car when visiting the library.
 You cannot bring children with you to the library.
 Handle the library materials with care.
 Eating, drinking, and using mobile phones are prohibited inside the library.
 You are responsible for your personal belongings.
 Follow the instructions of the library staff inside the library.

Access: Eight-minute walk from Keikyu Kanazawa-Hakkei Station (High Speed Limited Express train does not stop at this station)

On-Campus Route: Go inside the main gate and walk towards the clock tower. You will see the main entrance of the Library on your right when you get to the end of the road.
