Medical Studies in the School of Medicine
The Educational Goal of the School of Medicine
The Yokohama City University School of Medicine originated as a medical facility affiliated with Juzen Hospital (established 1874) and was founded as Yokohama Municipal Medical College in 1944. Subsequently named Yokohama Medical College (in 1948), the School of Medicine in its present-day form came into existence in 1952. The school has produced around 3,000 excellent doctors who have contributed to community medical care and progress in medical science during its 61 years. The School of Medicine's educational goal is to educate physicians, nurses and public health nurses, as well as medical researchers, medical teaching staff and public health administrators who can serve roles in fields from primary to advanced medical care, along with medical science.
Goal of Medical Studies Education
Our primary educational goal at the Medical Studies Department is to educate physicians who can provide patient-centered treatment and contribute to improvements in community medical care. For students to become such a doctor, they need to acquire communication skills, along with knowledge and expertise in medical science and medical treatment. Listening carefully to patients, explaining the condition of patients in an easily understood manner and conducting medical care based on a team approach that combines the strengths of all the staff constitute the basis for medical care. Not only that, but doctors are required to think about the safety of medical treatment, have a strong ethical perspective and be able to act responsibly. Our medical school curriculum emphasizes this kind of education and is designed to educate well-rounded physicians. The School of Medicine also puts a high premium on the education of graduate researchers who can promote advanced medical care and research into life sciences to international standards. As such, our curriculum is carefully designed to educate those who will be responsible for medical research in a new era, fostering the ability to pinpoint and solve problems and to raise inquisitive minds.
