International College of Arts and Sciences

International College of Arts and Sciences

This College was created through a merger of three departments: Business, International Liberal Arts, and Sciences, and provides studies in the fields of the humanities, sociology and natural sciences.

Educational Philosophy and Goals

In an age of increasing complexity and diversity, the International College of Arts and Sciences prepares students who will lead Japanfs future society. It educates them in the ability to be active and independent, as well as providing the foundations for rich human qualities that will enable them to firmly ascertain their own points of view toward society, think, and achieve the goals they have set for the future. We educate our students to be cosmopolitan, well-rounded individuals able to respond appropriately to changing times. The College curriculum is comprised of four years of a practical, comprehensive mix of wide-ranging liberal arts curricula with an international perspective and advanced areas of specialized studies, organically linking liberal arts and specialized studies. We call this our gpractical liberal artsh education as we consider that it provides leadership capabilities for the 21st century. We also place priority on the systematic promotion of the fundamental scholarship that forms the basis for acquisition of a high degree of specialized capabilities, broad, open-minded judgment, and inculcation of rich human qualities and ethical sensitivities. At the same time we prepare our students to communicate effectively in international society by increasing their language skills, with a focus on the use of English in written materials, presentations, and discussions/conversations Moreover, we educate our students to become people who possess the practical basic scholarship and applied skills and abilities to continually acquire new knowledge and specialized capabilities throughout their lives so they can cope with abrupt changes in human society. Our goal is to imbue individuals with an international perspective, creativity and a sense of ethics appropriate to studying in the international city of Yokohama.

Course Structure

We have avoided overly subdividing our courses into narrow fields, as they have been up to now, in order to provide interdisciplinary, practical liberal arts training. At the International College of Arts and Sciences three Divisions each offer two courses of study, with one additional interdisciplinary course involving each division, for a total of seven courses of study.
