Features of undergraduate courses
International College of Arts and Sciences
Our course is designed to educate students so that they will be able to discover and resolve modern issues on their own. The curriculum is comprised of a comprehensive mix of studies in the fi elds of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences with a global perspective.
- Selection of courses in the sophomore year
When students advance to their sophomore year,they will select one of the seven courses provided,which are structured by the division of study necessary to pursue their academic field of choice in a cross-disciplinary and practical manner.Sophomore course selection basically corresponds to the category in which one was matriculated,but post-matriculation changes are also possible as long as students complete the prerequisites required by each course during their freshman year with satisfactory grades.
- More than one course as major/minor available
YCU's education system off ers students a flexibility to select more than one course to specialize as double-majors or major/minor if students wish to specialize in multiple fields of study rather than a single major.
- Specialized Liberal Arts Seminar offersclasses in English
Specialized Liberal Arts Seminar off ers classes in English as a measure to promote further internationalization of the curriculum.
School of Medicine
Our objective is to educate students to be respectable medical professionals with wellrounded characters who can understand the dignity of every life as well as the ability to solve problems by high ethical standards while
acquiring technical knowledge and advanced techniques compatible with the progress of frontier medical practices and primary care.
- Education environment with two university hospitals
YCU has two university hospitals, which allow us to provide the latest medical technology to our medical students through close coordination between School of Medicine and University Hospitals by introducing research results in clinical care.
- Various approaches to improve medical care
Approaches utilized at YCU for improvement of medical care have been adopted as the contemporary GP, and medical professional GP. Under the "Community Children Health Project by Medical Students", which was adopted as the Support Program for the Contemporary Educational Needs project (Contemporary GP), where students of Medical Studies and College of Nursing organize a team and visit local elementary and junior high schools to give classes. This project aims to enhance their knowledge about medicine and nursing as well as the skills required to teach children how to create a zest for living and the importance of helping each other. Distinctive University Education Support Program (Distinctive GP) - Practical Education about Medical Safety by School of Medicine Training high quality medical professionals according to social needs of medical care in the community (Medical Professional GP) - Introduction of long-term training course for specialized physicians in fi elds where there is a physicians/enhanced support system for parental care in hospital
- High pass ratio of national examination
Every year, a high ratio of our students pass the national examination for physicians and nurses. In fiscal year 2007, YCUfs pass rate for the National Medical License Exam was 96.7% , which placed us in the nationfs top 8, and the top 2 among the prefectural and municipal universities. Junior College Department of Nursing had a 100% pass ratio for the National Nursing License Exam. In fiscal year 2008, YCU discontinued the Junior College Department of Nursing. YCU will produce new graduates from the College of Nursing this year.
- High acceptance ratio of training physicians
Most of our medical students apply for initial clinical training after graduation at our university hospitals. Almost 100% of the applicants were accepted for the program during the last four consecutive years. We are one of the nationfs leading postgraduate education hospitals.
